Q&A: Best Video Game Duo

words by DrJohnGalt

This week’s question: What’s your favorite video game duo?

Nintendo’s Mario & Luigi jumped to mind first. But since they don’t actually play onscreen together at the same time I decided they weren’t the best answer. Another NES duo might be Orin and Cutrus from 8 Eyes. They do play onscreen together, but I don’t think it’s a balanced pairing; the bird is clearly a supporting character with no unique personality.

How about Banjo-Kazooie, whose first appearance was the N64? Maybe a good answer, but I never spend much time with the series so I’ll look someplace else.

Maybe Ratchet & Clank? Two distinct characters, often helping each other out to work thru puzzles and missions. Fun games, so not a bad choice. We first met Ratchet and Clank on the PS2 in 2002 and have had a wild ride with them ever since.

Jak & Daxter (PS2)

Jak & Daxter (PS2)

But I finally settled on Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter. Both interesting personalities, great interplay between the characters, and overall a strong action/platforming franchise. They play together on-screen, but not as individuals. The first game, released for the PS2 in December of 2001, is the one I enjoyed most, but several PlayStation exclusive follow-ups and spin-offs have since hit the market for various Sony consoles and handhelds.

I really couldn’t think of any games that didn’t have the obvious star-power of the ones I listed. What are some of your favorite game duos? What are some of the lesser-known I missed? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. You remind me I have to buy 8 Eyes for the NES and see if it’s really a shameless clone of Castlevania…:)

  2. It is similar to Castlevania but it’s not as fun. Also if you’re playing by yourself it’s very difficult to control both characters. But it’s not expensive, and I don’t have it anymore so have been watching to get it back in my collection.
