Who’s Playing What? [04/27/18]

It’s been a long week of gaming; here are a few of the things I’ve been doing the past seven days! Picked up a few new titles on Steam, finished up a few others, and continued a few long-running games. Unfortunately no new additions to the Collection this week, but garage sale season is starting…
Over the weekend I was able to wrap up Far Cry 5. And wow. That ending? Wow. The Far Cry games always have some twist before the credits, but never quite like this. I’m still not sure I liked it, but I wasn’t disappointed at all.
I picked up Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life S/E on sale on the PS Store. I’ve got Save the Homeland on the PS2 and enjoyed it (for a while, anyway). The games feel dated, but I’m still having fun. Think of a old Animal Crossing or Stardew Valley experience. Not much action, but entertaining nonetheless. A perfect chillout game.
Also from the PS Store sale was The Adventures of Pip from Tic Toc Games. I’d never heard of this one but it was only a few dollars and it looked like a solid retro-style 2D side-scrolling platformer. The controls are tight, the pixel graphics stylish, the story and dialogue clever. It’s more of a puzzler than I expected, but the frustration was well-balanced with fun.
And of course the team had our regular Stellaris Saturday session. I’ve still not completed a game, but this is a great shoot-the-shit time to catch up with friends and build our interstellar empires.
Another recent purchase was Humble’s Strategy Bundle. I already had half the games but there were several here I wanted to try out. First was Tooth and Tail, an RTS-lite. The game is more like Starcraft than Total War, with an emphasis on resource management and a somewhat simple rock-paper-scissors combat that superior numbers can often overcome. It feels like winning is as much about learning to exploit the game mechanics as any true tactical planning, but I enjoyed the first few levels and am excited to get back to more action.
Also in the Bundle was Dungeon of the Deep. It’s another pixel adventure, an isometric tower-defense type. Not really sure about this one; I want to like it but the lack of tutorial or instruction got me to move on pretty quickly. I will watch a few playthru vids before I try it again.
At a friend’s urging, I tried Plague Inc: Evolved. It’s an interesting idea, but I’m not sure it’s for me. I ended up being the visible disease, the distraction to keep the scientists busy while my partner carefully evolved his own toxicity. By the time science had found a cure for me he was ready to unleash his death upon the world. We won, but do I care enough to learn the intricacies of the game?
I also joined up with some people for my first play of the RTS Planetary Annihilation: TITANS. I skipped the tutorial so decided to sit back and follow orders while I tried to get a feel for the game. It could be fun, but it will take a few more tries before I pick it up.
And I started some new missions on the great Bomber Crew. I’ve had this one for a while but haven’t played it in months. After some refresher training I assembled a winning crew and… well, everybody died the first time out. So I recruited an even more impressive team and tried again and so far we’ve walked away successfully from each assignment. This one will be getting a lot more play over the coming weeks…
And of course there was my weekly Sunday Scrolls session. Who doesn’t love The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion? It seems each week I get a few more people tuning in to watch me play and give me tips. I’ve learned a lot about magic this time (I’ve avoided spellcasting in previous plays) and I’m having a blast!
I tried to get back into Raze’s Hell again, but it’s just so damned frustrating. I think a large part of that is from the fact that the dark levels are almost pitch black. I really can’t see anything so have to blindly bump my way around to the next checkpoint. But this time there are people shooting at me, and I don’t ever get where I need to go. I beat this game when it came out, but for some reason have just gotten stuck about halfway through. Sigh.
I also started a new run of Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy on the PS2 and it’s still as fun as I remember it! Going to be a fun series to play!
What has everyone else been playing the past week? And more importantly, what’s on tap for this weekend? Let me know in the comments below!
